PWL Capital is structured such that all your assets are held in accounts in your name by our carrying broker, National Bank Independent Network. When you deposit money to your accounts, the cheque is made out to NBIN, never PWL. Any movements of funds or securities in or out of your accounts can only be executed with your written authorization. The monthly account statements that you receive for each one of your accounts is mailed directly from the offices of National Bank Independent Network, without our intervention, ensuring an unbiased and audited valuation of your holdings.

PWL Capital and our Investment Advisors are registered and regulated by the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization (CIRO). By virtue of our registration with the CIRO, we are also subject to the oversight of the provincial regulatory bodies (e.g.: Autorité des Marchés Financiers (AMF) in Quebec or the Ontario Securities Commission (OSC) in Ontario.)

As a member of CIRO, we must comply with a series of rules and procedures governing securities transactions and portfolio management. Our firm must also undergo three regular inspections conducted by this self-regulatory organization.

Our Chief Compliance Officer (CCO) is responsible to ensure that each transaction is verified. In addition, she conducts a full audit of the accounts under our management on a quarterly basis.

PWL’s chartered accountants, Richter, conduct an annual financial audit and review our financial results and controls. The results of their work are reported to the shareholders of PWL and industry regulators.

We use the highest level of external and internal controls to monitor all portfolios. You can be sure your portfolio is being monitored by:

Small is safe

We’re small enough to know everything that’s going on…

  • with your advisor and with your investments.
  • and have total control over all our market transactions and all activities of the firm.
  • to audit, reconcile and approve all transactions. Every. Single. Day. 100%

You don’t want to worry about your money. You want to get on with your life. That’s where we can help.

Governance & Internal Controls

Canadian Investor Protection Fund (CIPF)

CIPF was established by the investment industry with the mandate to maintain adequate resources to return assets belonging to eligible customers in cases where the CIPF Member becomes insolvent. Each investment dealer contributes to a substantial fund that CIPF maintains. CIPF is not a government organization. Payments to clients are determined independently by CIPF, not by the investment dealers.

Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization (CIRO)

CRIO Logo

PWL Capital is required to undergo two regulatory audits.

  • The sales compliance audit covers:
    • investment objectives,
    • risk parameters established with the clients,
    • suitability of investments
    • and compliance with regulated internal procedures.
  • The financial compliance audit covers:
    • day-to-day administrative processes,
    • validation of financial statements,
    • regulatory capital requirements and the usual financial processes.

After each audit, CIRO issues a compliance report listing the modifications or improvements required. After CIRO has submitted its report, the member firm must indicate how it plans to correct the deficiencies that have been identified. CIRO then follows up on the implementation of corrective measures.

Centre for Fiduciary Excellence, LLC (CEFEX)

PWL is among the first Investment Advisor firms globally to successfully complete CEFEX’s independent certification process.

CEFEX is an independent global assessment and certification organization that helps determine the trustworthiness of investment fiduciaries. CEFEX certification means that the organization recognizes PWL’s compliance with a defined standard of practice, and that PWL has demonstrated its adherence to the industry’s best practices and is positioned to earn the public’s trust.

The annual certification process involves a detailed assessment of operational data and procedures, as well as on-site interviews with key personnel.

PWL is registered at www.cefex.org, where its certificate can also be viewed.

Global Association of Independent Advisors (GAIA)

GAIA is an international network of independently owned investment advisory firms, whose overriding commitment to fiduciary excellence ensures they always put their clients’ interests first.

PWL Capital is the only Canadian firm to have qualified for GAIA thus far. Membership in GAIA is strictly limited to fee-based wealth advisors who are not aligned with financial institutions. And GAIA members are required to obtain and maintain CEFEX certification.

National Bank Independent Network (NBIN)

Our carrying broker, NBIN, safeguards your assets, as they are responsible to execute and monitor all trade orders and administrative requests such as withdrawals and transfers between accounts. NBIN must comply with the regulations of the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization (CIRO) and the securities commissions’ (Autorité des marchés financiers du Québec).
