CASE STUDY: Coordinating Corporate and Personal Planning for an Incorporated Dentist

Client Profile

  • Client: Dr. Carter
  • Occupation: Dentist in Ontario with a professional corporation and a young family
  • Goal: Reach financial independence while funding a handful of personal projects and gain greater clarity and confidence around financial decisions.

The Challenge

Dr. Carter had the pieces—investments, a corporation, and a growing family—and wanted to know how they fit together. His priorities:

  • Simplifying his investment strategy
  • Building a plan that showed his real progress toward financial independence
  • Determining how much he could comfortably allocate toward personal projects while staying on track with his broader goals
  • Incorporating tax considerations into his financial strategy by coordinating with his accountant

Our Approach

We began by building a financial plan to test whether Dr. Carter was on track for his long-term goals. We modelled different scenarios to stress-test the plan, dug into his goals and priorities, and pinpointed where small adjustments could buy him meaningful flexibility.

We also collaborated with his accountant to develop a compensation and withdrawal strategy for his professional corporation. The objective was to determine how funds could be withdrawn over the coming years in a tax-efficient manner while supporting the client’s broader financial plan and providing access to personal cash for his planned projects.

Results

The planning process provided the client with:

  • A financial plan he could check his progress against, instead of guessing
  • A simplified framework for managing his investments and broader finances
  • A strategy for withdrawing funds from his professional corporation to support personal spending and projects
  • An advisor and accountant working in step, so his personal and corporate strategies finally spoke to each other

Despite being a busy professional with limited time, the client was able to make meaningful progress early in the planning relationship. By prioritizing a deeper understanding of his goals, values, financial structure, and spending needs, we were able to establish a clear planning framework within the first few meetings.
